Mission running? Can be a grind as they get repetitive after a while, but they are relatively safe to do - especially if you follow mission guide websites that tell you how to tank, what ammo to use and what ships will trigger secondary spawns etc...

The salvaging skill increases the chance of salvage. Higher the level the higher the chance. So you will get more salvage faster with higher skills. But it will be the same stuff you get - regardless of level.
